WOMEN & CHILDREN'S CENTER

The Women & Children's Center at Carolinas Medical Center-Union features spacious, private birthing suites, a newborn nursery, pediatric unit, and postpartum and gynecology units - all designed in a warm, home-like atmosphere. The center includes a high-tech infant security system, a 22-bed general nursery and a Level II nursery that provides care for infants born 32 weeks and older with respiratory conditions, low birth weight, or the need for oxygen or IV therapy. The Women & Children's Center also provides a hearing test for all newborns before they leave the hospital.

Web Baby Nursery
CMC-Union Web Baby Nursery provides family and friends a way to see their new love ones born in our Women and Children's Center. You can also post messages to the new baby and the proud parents. Spirit of Women
Moving Women to Good Health. That's what Spirit of Women is all about. This national initiative focuses on improving ALL aspects of a woman's life-mind, body and spirit. We bring together traditional Women's Services with a broad range of educational and social activities that assist women in achieving a balance between health, work, family and personal aspirations.

Educational Programs
Families can choose from a wide range of educational programs at the Women & Children's Center. Offerings include sibling tours, baby-sitting classes, support groups and prenatal classes. Mothers with gestational diabetes receive support from the Diabetes Center, which is directed by a certified diabetes educator. A certified lactation consultant is available to provide support and instruction to breastfeeding mothers while they are in the hospital and at home.

Pediatric Care
Children receiving care in the pediatric unit have a special place in which to recover from an accident or illness. The unit features 13 private rooms decorated with special furniture and artwork to make children more comfortable. All children have access to a TV/VCR to watch videos of their choice. They receive a special restaurant-style menu that includes pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, gelatin, cookies and cake. The unit has a playroom equipped with games, toys and a TV/VCR for younger children.

Staff
The Women & Children's Center offers the expertise of highly qualified and specailly trained physicians and nurses. Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Neonatal Advanced Life Support programs are attended regularly by staff who care for the infants and children in the nursery and pediatric areas.
