SURGICAL CENTER

The Surgical Center within Carolinas Medical Center-Union offers an impressive level of experience and technological expertise. More than 37 surgeons, specializing in general, urological, orthopaedic, vascular, gynecologic, ear-nose-throat, plastic, dental, and ophthalmic (eye) surgeries, use the hospital's six state-of-the-art surgical suites.

Day Surgery Center
In addition to CMC-Union's complete surgery department, a variety of surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis through the Day Surgery Center. Continued advancements in same-day surgery are helping thousands of people receive the benefits of high-quality, affordable surgery. Same-day surgery allows patients to recover in the comfort of their homes as opposed to an overnight hospital stay.

Procedures performed at the Day Surgery Center include:

  • Orthopaedic related: knee athroscopies, fracture repair, shoulder reconstruction, total joints, rotator cuff repairs, ACL reconstruction.
  • Eye procedures such as cataract removal and muscle repair (strabismus)
  • Ear, nose and throat procedures such as tube placement in children's ears, tonsillectomies, and reconstruction of inner ear components to improve hearing
  • Hernia repairs and gall bladder removal
  • Fertility-related procedures
  • Breast biopsies
  • Plastic surgery including breast reconstruction, reduction and augmentation
  • Maxillofacial procedures to repair jaws
  • Tubal ligation and vasectomies
  • Dental restoration and reconstruction
  • Pediatric urology and general surgery

 QUICK FACTS
Preparing for Surgery:

Do not eat or drink anything after midnight before the day of surgery unless advised to do so by your physician. In the event you mistakenly drink or eat something, your surgery may have to be postponed.

If you develop a cold, flu or other acute illness before surgery, please notify your doctor immediately.

After your surgery is scheduled, do not begin any new medication without your doctor's approval.

Remove all makeup, cosmetics, nail polish, wigs, false eyelashes and contact lenses before arriving for your surgical appointment.

Leave all jewelry and valuables at home, including wedding bands.

Take a bath or shower at home the morning of your surgery.
Types of anesthesia include:

General anesthesia - You are asleep during surgery.

Conduction anesthesia - A nerve block numbs only the appropriate body part.

Local anesthesia - Anesthetic is injected into a specific area.

Local anesthesia with sedation - Anesthesia is injected into the surgery area only and a sedative is provided intravenously.
