CANCER

The Cancer Center at Carolinas Medical Center-Union: Treating the Whole Person-Mind, Body and Spirit.

The word "cancer" can cause fear and anxiety in the strongest of people. But early detection and advances in treatment are bringing hope, quality of life and survival to thousands of people diagnosed each year. Now, CMC-Union has expanded its cancer treatment program and facilities so that people fighting this disease can focus their energy on recovering, not traveling far from home.

The Cancer Center at CMC-Union serves adults with various forms of cancer including skin, lung, breast, prostate, eshophageal, colorectal, cervical, brain, bone, head and neck, pancreatic, endometrial and lymphomas.

Treatment Options
Each patient's treatment plan will depend on the type, severity and location of their cancer. Each patient consults with the board-certified medical and radiation oncologists on staff at CMC-Union to determine the best course of treatment. Although many cancers are treated with surgery, others may require chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy treatment at CMC-Union utilizes one or more medications to treat cancer. Depending on the type of cancer, chemotherapy can be administered through a pill, an injection or intravenous (IV) therapy. Patients receive chemotherapy in the Cancer Center's modern facility that features comfortable recliners, headphones and televisions. Specially trained oncology nurses are on staff to administer chemotherapy treatments. To learn more about Chemotherapy services, call 704-225-8966.

Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy is administered under the direction of a board-certified radiation oncologist utilizing the latest technology. This includes 3-D treatment planning along with sophisticated diagnostic imaging procedures. Radiation therapy is delivered through a state of the art linear accelerator. Modern techniques are used to minimize the damage to normal tissues. Radiation may also be used prior to the surgery to shrink a tumor or after surgery to prevent the growth of remaining cancer cells. The Cancer Center also utilizes Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) as part of its comprehensive treatment services. To learn more about Radiation Therapy services, call 704-225-2826.

Support Services
Located on CMC-Union's campus, the Cancer Center is supported by other services that a cancer patient may require. From cardiovascular and pulmonology services to diabetes management, pastoral care and home health services, patients have all the resources right here at home to fight cancer without fighting traffic. As a member of the Association of Community Cancer Centers, CMC-Union works to educate the community on cancer prevention and offers screenings throughout the year to detect cancer in the earliest and most treatable stages. CMC-Union works with the American Cancer Society to offer support groups for patients and their families as well as the "Look Good, Feel Better" program.
