Safe Kids-Safe Communities

Safe Kids Union County
Led by CMC-Union and Union EMS, Safe Kids Union County was founded in 1999. Safe Kids is a non-profit organization that addresses the issues of unintentional injuries. Safe Kids Union County is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide, a global network of organizations whose mission is to prevent accidental childhool injuries, a leading killer of children 14 and under. More than 450 coalitions in 16 countries bring together health and safety experts, educators, corporations, foundations, governments and volunteers to educate and protect families.

In Union County, our coalition consists of more than 25 community partners who join together to fight unintentional injuries. Partners include: paramedics/EMT's, local law enforcement agencies, N.C. State Highway Patrol, fire fighters, local Red Cross Chapter, medical/healthcare professionals, educators, business leaders and community service professionals.

Unintentional injuries, better known to many as "accidents," are often overlooked because many feel these injuries were unavoidable, but in reality they are easily preventable over 90 percent of the time with a little forethought and proper planning. Safe Communities

The goal of the Safe Communities program is to decrease traffic-related fatalities and injuries and associated costs, increase safety awareness and increase the number of people involved in keeping our community safe. The Safe Communities program in Union County has adopted the national Safe Communties model which includes the following four components:

* Data collection and analysis
* Coalition building
* Traffic safety strategies
* Evaluation

Traffic injury is the most common cause of hospitalization and the leading cause of death for persons under age 40.  It affects us all -- drivers, passengers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists.  It costs millions of dollars in health care and social support resources.  Being aware of the effects of traffic injuries and how to prevent crashes from occurring is more than half the battle.

One goal of the Safe Communities program is to achieve a better understanding of motor vehicle related injuries and associated costs within our own community and how they impact each community's overall injury problem.

The Safe Communities program will provide a chance to reduce the number of crashes and injuries.  Being aware of the problems and focusing on ways of preventing traffic crashes will benefit all of our lives.

The Safe Communities program works with law enforcement agencies, local governments, schools, businesses, health departments, and community and advocacy organizations to reduce traffic injuries.  These programs also actively work with medical, acute care and rehabilitation centers.  All groups need to be engaged as integral partners in preventing injuries.

Partnerships and leadership are the foundation for making an injury prevention program work.  Safe Communities is your springboard to cut down on injuries and their related costs in Union County.
