CURRICULUM
This program's curriculum is designed to permit the resident to prepare for a career in an environment where there are few immediately available consultants; to recognize, stabilize and effectively transfer patients with illnesses and trauma who need tertiary care; and to effectively work as the captain of a team to deliver comprehensive primary healthcare in suburban and rural areas.
Some significant features of the second and third year curriculum which deserve emphasis are:
- Thirteen, four-week rotations instead of twelve, month rotations each Academic year
- One-on-one preceptor/resident relationships and teaching.
- Medical education in a small town environment.
- Opportunity to work with an underserved, multicultural population through the local health department.
- Continuity clinics in a private family practice clinic in an "apprenticeship" model.
- Common and shared teaching conferences with the main program.
- Emphasis on community health services to facilitate learning a team approach to care.
